Malta Leads EU’s Short-Term Online Booking Growth in Q3 2024

During the third quarter of 2024, travelers spent an impressive 366.2 million nights in short-term rental accommodations across the EU. These stays, facilitated by platforms such as Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group, and Tripadvisor, represent an 18% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This data highlights the growing popularity of online platforms for short-stay bookings.

Monthly Trends in Q3 2024

Each month of the third quarter showed robust growth:

  • July 2024: A total of 135 million nights were booked, marking a 16.4% rise compared to July 2023.
  • August 2024: Bookings peaked with 152.2 million nights, a remarkable 21.6% increase from August 2023.
  • September 2024: The month recorded 79 million nights, showing a 14% growth compared to September 2023.

This data, published by Eurostat in January 2025, reflects monthly trends in short-stay accommodations offered via online platforms.

Malta’s Record Growth in August

August, the busiest tourism month in the EU, witnessed growth in all member states. Malta led the charge with a significant 41.4% increase in nights booked compared to August 2023. Other notable performers included:

  • Germany: +32.7%
  • France: +29.9%

In contrast, smaller increases were observed in:

  • Croatia: +9.7%
  • Bulgaria: +12.2%
  • Slovenia: +13.6%
