Sorin Mierlea , President of InfoCons Consumers Protection , is participating in the Economics & Statistics Working Group Meeting of the EUIPO Observatory

Today, April 15, 2025,  Mr. Sorin Mierlea, the President of InfoCons, is attending the Working Group meeting on Economics & Statistics within the Observatory – European Office for Intellectual Property – EUIPO.

The Economics & Statistics Working Group Meeting, organized by EUIPO, is being held in Alicante, Spain and will cover various topics related to Intellectual Property.

InfoCons is an active member of the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) Observatory. This involvement underscores InfoCons‘ commitment to addressing the challenges posed by intellectual property infringements across Europe.

Meeting Agenda

  • Welcome and Update on Economics and Statistics Activities

An update on activities since the last Working Group meetings, along with an outline of planned activities for 2025.

  • Firm-Level IP Contribution Study

Presentation of the main results of the joint EUIPO-EPO study, Intellectual Property Rights and Firm Performance in the EU, published in January 2025.

  • EUIPO-OECD Activities

Overview of two new OECD studies being published in March/April: one on the Belt and Road Initiative and trade in counterfeit goods, and the other on the updated base study on international trade in counterfeits.
Additionally, an update on the plenary meeting of OECD’s Working Party on Combatting Illicit Trade, held in March 2025.

  • Progress Report on the Study on IP-Backed Finance, IP Valuation, and Commercialization

An overview of the study examining how European start-ups and SMEs can use IP rights to secure financing, stimulating innovation and growth. A progress report on the study will be provided for discussion.

  • Development in Economic Statistics

An update on the implementation of new features from SNA 2025 and its impact on economic statistics. The upcoming approval of the next version of ESA by 2029 will also be covered.

  • Terms of Reference of New Joint EUIPO-EPO Study on Innovation in European Sectors

Introduction to a new joint study focused on innovation, sectoral IPR intensity, and financing, including an update on previous industry-level IP Contribution studies.
