The day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly to emphasize the importance of education for peace and development worldwide. Without inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities, countries cannot achieve gender equality or break the cycle of poverty that continues to leave millions behind. Today’s realities remain stark: 250 million children and young people are out of school, and 763 million adults lack basic literacy skills, representing a serious violation of the right to education.

The International Day of Education 2026 focuses on the theme “The power of youth in co-creating education.” Young people under the age of 30 make up more than half of the world’s population and are a powerful force for innovation, social change and sustainable development. Yet they are also among the most affected by inequality, poverty and limited access to quality education and decent work opportunities.
