Romania Represented by InfoCons at the General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO / Organisation mondiale de la propriété intellectuelle – OMPI , in Geneva
Today marks the official opening, in Geneva, at the headquarters of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), of the Sixty-Eighth Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of WIPO, held from 7 to 15 July 2026. Romania is represented at this major international event by InfoCons, through its President Sorin Mierlea. As a member of WIPO, InfoCons is taking part in the proceedings throughout the entire event.
The General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization brings together each year, in Geneva, the member states and accredited organizations to review the Organization's work, approve the budget and set policy directions in the fields of patents, trademarks, industrial designs, geographical indications, copyright and related rights.
An event of global scale
According to the official list of participants published by WIPO, more than 1,300 participants have registered for this series of meetings. At the time the list was consulted (provisional and continuously updated), 1,315 participants were registered, of whom approximately 1,104 representing member states and 210 representing organizations.
They come from around 170 represented member states and some 87 intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations accredited as observers – including InfoCons. These figures confirm the truly universal character of the forum: almost every country in the world and a significant number of international organizations gather in Geneva to decide the future of the global intellectual property system.
InfoCons – the voice of Romanian consumers on the international stage
InfoCons is a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO and the only consumer protection organization in Romania accredited within this international forum. This official recognition places Romania on the global map of organizations that contribute to the international dialogue in the field of intellectual property.
Through its participation in the meetings, consultations and working groups organized by WIPO, InfoCons helps to promote consumer interests in the international debates on intellectual property and supports the development of policies that encourage innovation, respect for intellectual property rights and the fight against counterfeiting. At European level, InfoCons is an active member of the EUIPO Observatory – the European Union Intellectual Property Office – and at national level it has been part, since 2006, of the Working Group on Intellectual Property Matters, coordinated by the Prosecutor's Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice.
Why it matters for consumers
The decisions taken in Geneva have direct consequences for consumers' lives: a robust intellectual property system guarantees the authenticity and safety of products, supports innovation and combats counterfeit goods, which can endanger the health and safety of citizens. Through its presence, InfoCons ensures that, beyond the legal and economic dimension, the consumer perspective is also taken into account.
In support of this objective, InfoCons has developed a unique and innovative consumer protection app that integrates European alerts on dangerous and non-compliant products and allows citizens to report items suspected of counterfeiting or piracy, turning every consumer into an active partner for a safer and more transparent marketplace.
InfoCons will provide daily updates throughout the nine days of the event through www.infocons.org , presenting the agenda of each day and the topics debated in Geneva.
