About the National Day of the Republic of Austria
The National Day of the Republic of Austria is celebrated annually on 26 October and commemorates an important moment in the country’s modern history.
On 26 October 1955, the Austrian Parliament adopted the Federal Constitutional Law through which the country declared its permanent neutrality and committed itself not to joining any military alliances.
This moment followed the signing of the Austrian State Treaty on 15 May 1955 and the completion of the withdrawal of the Allied occupation forces. The date of 26 October was officially established as Austria’s National Day in 1965.
The National Day highlights the values of independence, sovereignty, democracy and peace and is marked through official ceremonies, public events and receptions organised by Austrian diplomatic missions around the world.
