COP29 Day 2 : Opening of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit and High-Level Discussions on Global Climate Goals

Day 2 of COP29 marks the opening of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit, a major event focused on advancing global commitments to address climate change. Heads of State, government officials, and leaders from intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations gathered today, November 12, to participate in a series of high-level discussions and events aimed at accelerating climate action. This summit, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, sets the stage for the first part of the High-Level Segment, where leaders will present national statements and engage in targeted dialogues.

The formal opening includes statements from notable figures, including President Ilham Aliyev, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and Maimunah Mohd Sharif, former UN-Habitat Executive Director. These opening remarks aim to underscore the urgency of international collaboration to achieve tangible climate goals and highlight the role of diverse sectors in creating sustainable, climate-resilient futures.

Tuesday’s program is packed with key events, beginning with bilateral meetings between leaders and a formal group photo session. The primary sessions involve national statements, where Heads of State seek to outline their countries’ climate commitments and share progress on emissions reduction, adaptation strategies, and renewable energy adoption. These statements aim to reflect an overarching theme of cooperative action, as countries committ to significant environmental targets in alignment with the goals of the Paris Agreement.

High-level roundtables on critical topics like energy and climate finance will be among the day’s highlights. The “High-Level Roundtable on Energy: Advancing Climate Mitigation Action” focused on strategies to reduce carbon emissions through energy sector transformation, emphasizing renewable energy development and technological innovation. In parallel, the “High-Level Roundtable on Enabling Climate Finance: The Make-or-Break Moment for a Sustainable Future” concentrate=on mobilizing financial resources to support developing nations in their climate efforts. Both discussions aim to illustrate the importance of equitable financial and technical support in achieving global climate objectives.

Throughout the day, a variety of special events hosted by the COP29 Presidency will take place, including high-level dialogues and sessions hosted by individual world leaders.
