This date honors the “Schuman declaration”, a milestone which outlined Robert Schuman’s vision for a novel type of political collaboration in Europe, aiming to render inter-European conflict inconceivable. Schuman’s initiative is widely regarded as the basis of what has evolved into the European Union.
On May 9, 1950, five years after the end of the Second World War, the French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, laid the foundation stone of the European Union in a speech delivered in Paris, proposing the placement of coal and steel production under the control of a common authority, in order to control armament production and the possibility of a future military conflict being avoided.
