E307 AlphaTocopherol

What is Food Additive E 307 ?

E307, also known as alpha-tocopherol, is a food additive classified as an antioxidant, often derived from vegetable oils such as sunflower oil, safflower oil, and wheat germ oil. E307 is also known as Vitamin E. It is extracted from vegetable oils rich in Vitamin E, but can also be synthetically produced.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant naturally present in many foods and is also available as a dietary supplement. The term “alpha” indicates that this is the most active form of Vitamin E.

The main function of E307 in food products is as an antioxidant. Antioxidants are essential in preventing the oxidation of fats and oils in foods, which can lead to rancidity, unwanted flavors, and spoilage.

By delaying the oxidation process, E307 helps extend the shelf life of various food products:

  • Cooking oils: Helps maintain the quality and freshness of oils during storage.
  • Margarine and butter: Prevents fats from becoming rancid.
  • Snacks and pastries: Added to extend freshness by protecting the fats in these products.
  • Dairy products: Used in products like cheese to maintain their quality over time.

Beyond food, E307 is also used in cosmetics and skincare products due to its antioxidant properties, helping to protect the skin against free radicals.

Contraindications and Risks

There are no concerns that tocopherols are genotoxic or carcinogenic. There is insufficient data to address reproductive and developmental toxicity. However, high doses of Vitamin E, especially in supplement form, have been associated with an increased risk of stroke.

Therefore, it is essential to maintain a balanced diet and avoid excessive intake of supplements.

In conclusion, E307, or alpha-tocopherol, is a vital component in the food industry, serving as a natural antioxidant to extend the shelf life of many products. Beyond its role as a food additive, E307 offers significant health benefits in the form of Vitamin E, contributing to overall well-being.

Regulatory bodies have deemed it safe for consumption, making it a valuable additive for the food and cosmetic industries. As always, moderation is key, and a balanced diet should provide sufficient Vitamin E for most people without the need for supplements.
