Taking a moment to evaluate the content you’re about to share can help prevent the spread of misinformation and make sure your posts are both credible and meaningful. Here are five essential questions everyone should consider before they click “share”:

 

  1. Who benefits from it?

Does the content stir emotions that seem designed to push an agenda? Watch out for sensational language like “You won’t believe this!” that aims to draw you in and influence your opinion.

 

  1. Can you verify it?

Ensure that what you’re sharing is backed by solid evidence or credible data that’s easy to access. Reliable information should have clear, trustworthy sources.

  1. Who wrote it?

Check that the content is created by a real person with appropriate expertise or from an authoritative source known for sharing verified information.

  1. Is the URL legitimate?

Look carefully at the URL for any minor alterations that could mean it’s fake, like “[email protected]” instead of “google.com.” Imposter URLs can mislead readers into believing they’re on trusted sites.
