The InfoCons Consumers Protection Representative is participating in the Workshop on the Korean Special Judicial Police

Today, 15 May 2025, an InfoCons representative is participating in the virtual Workshop on the Korean Special Judicial Police (SPJ), held via Zoom.

This event is organized within the framework of the EU–Republic of Korea Intellectual Property Action, a European Commission-funded initiative implemented by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). The project aims to strengthen cooperation between the EU and Korea in the field of intellectual property (IP).

The workshop focuses on the structure and operation of Korea’s IP enforcement system. It will highlight the organization, functions, key achievements, and best practices of the Korean Special Judicial Police. Enforcement responsibilities are split between two authorities: the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), responsible for industrial property rights, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST), responsible for copyright enforcement.

The agenda begins with general presentations on the enforcement roles of KIPO and MCST, as well as an overview of the EUIPO Observatory’s work within the broader European enforcement framework. Later sessions will delve into the specific roles and casework of SPJ divisions, including the Trademark Police, the Tech Police, and the Unfair Competition Investigation Division.

The workshop brings together a diverse group of stakeholders from both Korea and the EU—representatives from the European Commission, EUIPO, the Observatory network, and the private sector. This range of perspectives is expected to foster insightful discussions and contribute to a deeper shared understanding of current challenges and effective practices in IP enforcement.
