On International One Health Day , InfoCons Consumers Protection informs you about the connection between the health of people, animals, and the planet
One Health is an integrated and unifying approach that aims to balance and optimize the health of people, animals, and the environment.
It plays a vital role in preventing, predicting, detecting, and responding to global health threats such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
The approach mobilizes multiple sectors, disciplines, and communities at all levels of society to work together. Through collaboration, innovative and sustainable solutions can be developed that address root causes and create long-term improvements for global health.

One Health brings together the public health, veterinary, and environmental sectors, being particularly relevant for:
- Food and water safety;
- Nutrition and public health;
- Control of zoonoses (diseases that can spread between animals and humans, such as influenza, rabies, or Rift Valley fever);
- Pollution management;
- Combating antimicrobial resistance, which arises when microbes evolve to withstand antibiotic treatment.
Who makes the One Health approach work?
Shared responsibility is key. Government officials, researchers, and professionals across sectors — at local, national, regional, and global levels — must collaborate to respond effectively to health threats.
This includes:
- Developing shared databases and joint surveillance systems across sectors;
- Identifying root causes and understanding the connections between risks and impacts;
- Engaging communities to promote risk-reducing behaviors and support early detection and containment of disease outbreaks.

How is the World Health Organization – WHO advancing One Health?
The World Health Organization (WHO) established a One Health Initiative to integrate human, animal, and environmental health efforts across the organization.
WHO works closely with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), forming the One Health Quadripartite.
This alliance promotes multi-sectoral cooperation to reduce health threats at the human–animal–ecosystem interface. The required transformations are outlined in the Quadripartite One Health Joint Plan of Action (OH-JPA), which guides global, regional, and national efforts to prevent and mitigate current and future health challenges.
In May 2021, the One Health High-Level Expert Panel (OHHLEP) was established to advise FAO, UNEP, WHO, and WOAH on One Health matters. The panel provides recommendations for research on emerging disease threats and the development of a long-term global plan of action to prevent outbreaks of diseases such as H5N1 avian influenza, MERS, Ebola, Zika, and COVID-19.
The panel also investigates the impact of human activity on the environment and wildlife habitats, exploring how these pressures contribute to emerging diseases. Critical areas include food production and distribution, urbanization, infrastructure development, international trade and travel, biodiversity loss, and climate change — all of which can drive the emergence of zoonotic infections.
