International Day of Clean Energy, observed every year on 26 January, highlights the central role of clean energy in building a fairer world and protecting our planet. Energy sits at the heart of two major global challenges: ensuring that no one is left behind while responding effectively to climate change. Clean, affordable and reliable energy is essential to achieving both goals.
Despite progress, energy inequality remains a serious global issue. Today, 666 million people still live without access to electricity, more than 85% of them in Sub-Saharan Africa. For communities without reliable power, the consequences are far-reaching: limited access to education, healthcare and economic opportunities, and continued dependence on polluting fossil fuels that deepen poverty and environmental harm. In rural areas, around 1.5 billion people still rely on unsafe and inefficient cooking methods such as burning wood or dung, with the number continuing to rise in some regions.
