International Day of Clean Energy, observed every year on 26 January, highlights the central role of clean energy in building a fairer world and protecting our planet. Energy sits at the heart of two major global challenges: ensuring that no one is left behind while responding effectively to climate change. Clean, affordable and reliable energy is essential to achieving both goals.

Despite progress, energy inequality remains a serious global issue. Today, 666 million people still live without access to electricity, more than 85% of them in Sub-Saharan Africa. For communities without reliable power, the consequences are far-reaching: limited access to education, healthcare and economic opportunities, and continued dependence on polluting fossil fuels that deepen poverty and environmental harm. In rural areas, around 1.5 billion people still rely on unsafe and inefficient cooking methods such as burning wood or dung, with the number continuing to rise in some regions.

Clean energy is closely linked to socio-economic development and environmental sustainability. Without access to modern energy services, vulnerable populations face barriers that slow development and reinforce inequality. Although global access to clean energy has improved over time, the world is not on track to meet Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7), which aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all by 2030.

At the same time, encouraging progress is being made. The transition to renewable energy is accelerating, with installed renewable capacity per capita in developing countries reaching a record 341 watts per capita, up from 155 watts in 2015. These advances demonstrate that clean energy solutions are increasingly viable and scalable, offering real opportunities to close energy gaps while supporting economic growth.

Clean energy is also a cornerstone of climate action. A significant share of global greenhouse gas emissions comes from burning fossil fuels for electricity and heat. To limit global warming and avoid the worst impacts of climate change, the science is clear: the world must move away from fossil fuels and invest in renewable sources such as solar, wind, water, geothermal energy and sustainable waste solutions. Improving energy efficiency across transport, buildings, lighting and appliances is equally important, reducing emissions while lowering costs and energy demand.

Energy also plays a critical role in global food systems. Producing and transporting food accounts for about 30% of global energy use and contributes to 31% of greenhouse gas emissions. Feeding a growing global population—expected to reach nearly 10 billion by 2050—while staying within the 1.5°C climate threshold will require a major transformation of agrifood systems, making them more efficient, resilient and powered by clean energy.

The International Day of Clean Energy was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly through resolution A/77/327 to raise awareness and mobilize action for a just and inclusive energy transition. The date also marks the founding of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in 2009, reinforcing the global commitment to cooperation, innovation and shared responsibility in advancing clean energy—for people, communities and the planet.
