Today, we mark Safer Internet Day, a global initiative dedicated to promoting a safer, more responsible, and more inclusive online environment, especially for children and young people.

Over the years, Safer Internet Day has become a landmark event in the online safety calendar, reminding us that while the internet offers incredible opportunities for learning, creativity, and connection, it also comes with real risks.

Safer Internet Day: A Global Movement for Online Safety

Launched in 2004 as part of the European Commission’s first action plan for a safer internet, Safer Internet Day began as an EU-funded initiative and was later taken forward by the Insafe network of Safer Internet Centres.

Today, the campaign has grown far beyond its original geographical scope and is now celebrated in around 190 countries and territories worldwide, reaching millions of people across all continents.

Each year, Safer Internet Day calls on a wide range of stakeholders to take action, including:

  • European, national, and international policymakers
  • Industry representatives and technology companies
  • Civil society organisations
  • Educators and parents
  • Children and young people themselves

The Internet: Opportunity and Responsibility

The internet is a powerful tool. It enables access to knowledge, skill-building, creativity, and social interaction. However, alongside these benefits come challenges such as misinformation, cyberbullying, privacy risks, and exposure to harmful content.

Safer Internet Day is not only about raising awareness, it is also about empowering users, especially younger ones, with the knowledge and tools they need to stay safe online.

Six Tips for Staying Safe Online on Safer Internet Day

  1. Share Responsibly

Think carefully before posting content online. Always ask for consent before sharing photos or videos of others—especially when minors are involved.

  1. Manage Your Privacy

Use strong, unique passwords, review privacy settings regularly, and stay aware of how digital platforms and AI tools collect and use personal data.

  1. Protect Your Mental Well-Being

Set screen-time limits, take regular breaks, and avoid content that negatively affects your mental health. Remember that life also exists offline.

  1. Speak Up and Report Abuse

Cyberbullying, harassment, and discriminatory content should never be ignored. Report harmful behaviour and seek help if you become a victim.

  1. Think Before You Trust

Algorithms and artificial intelligence can amplify misinformation and bias. Always verify sources and question content before accepting it as true.

  1. Engage Positively Online

Use the internet to learn, connect, and express creativity—while respecting others. Positive engagement helps transform digital spaces into places of opportunity.

Collaboration for a Safer Digital Future

Creating a safer online environment is a shared responsibility. Collaboration between institutions, families, educators, industry, and young users themselves is essential to ensure that digital spaces remain safe, inclusive, and empowering.

Safer Internet Day reminds us that online safety is not a one-day effort, but an ongoing commitment. By adopting responsible habits, supporting one another, and staying informed, we can all contribute to a healthier digital environment.
