Furthermore, earlier this month, the European Commission opened formal proceedings against Shein under the Digital Services Act (DSA). The investigation concerns the platform’s systems for limiting the sale of illegal products within the European Union, including content that could constitute child sexual abuse material, such as child-like sex dolls. It also examines the risks linked to the addictive design of the service, including the use of points or rewards to encourage engagement, and the transparency of Shein’s recommender systems.

Under the DSA, Shein must clearly disclose the main parameters used in its recommendation systems and provide users with at least one option that is not based on profiling. The Commission will conduct an in-depth investigation, and the opening of proceedings does not prejudge the final outcome. These actions are complementary to ongoing consumer protection and product safety enforcement measures at EU level.

Be careful not to purchase counterfeit products!
