International Museum Day – InfoCons Consumer Protection for Art and Culture informs you!
Every year, since 1977, International Council of Museums has organised International Museum Day, a moment dedicated to promoting the essential role museums play in the cultural, educational, and social development of society.
Celebrated annually on 18 May, International Museum Day aims to raise awareness of the fact that museums are “an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.” Each year, thousands of museums around the world organise events, exhibitions, and activities dedicated to the public, helping bring people closer together through culture, history, and education.

The 2026 theme – “Museums Uniting a Divided World” – highlights the role of museums as spaces for dialogue, inclusion, and connection between communities, generations, and cultures. In a global context marked by social polarisation, cultural challenges, and unequal access to information and education, museums remain safe and open places where heritage, memory, and diversity can be discovered and understood with respect.
Through their activities, museums contribute to promoting peace, cooperation, and mutual respect, offering opportunities for learning, reflection, and connection between people. At the same time, they support the values of cultural diversity and sustainable development, playing an important role in strengthening dialogue between communities and protecting cultural heritage.

This year’s theme is also aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by promoting:
- reduced inequalities;
- peace, justice, and inclusive societies;
- partnerships for sustainable development.
In this context, as part of the National Programme for Consumer Protection in Art and Culture, InfoCons supports the importance of access to culture, education, and cultural heritage, encouraging respect for cultural values and for the institutions that contribute to preserving and promoting them. Museums represent spaces for dialogue, knowledge, and human connection, playing an essential role in the development of a responsible, informed society connected to authentic cultural values.
