  1. Introduction

Intellectual Property rights play a fundamental role in supporting innovation, creativity, economic development, and consumer trust in today’s increasingly digital and interconnected society. Beyond their legal and economic dimensions, Intellectual Property rights have a direct impact on consumers’ everyday lives by contributing to product safety, authenticity, transparency, and informed purchasing decisions.

At the same time, the rapid expansion of digital commerce, online marketplaces, and global distribution channels has intensified the circulation of counterfeit and non-compliant products, generating significant risks related to consumer safety, health protection, cybersecurity, and economic fraud. In this context, strengthening public awareness and improving access to reliable information regarding Intellectual Property rights have become essential priorities at national, European, and international level.

As a European consumer protection organization, InfoCons continues to actively support initiatives dedicated to Intellectual Property education, anti-counterfeiting awareness, consumer information, and the promotion of originality, innovation, and responsible consumer behavior.

The activities carried out by InfoCons during 2025 and 2026 were developed within a broader strategic framework focused on:

  • increasing public awareness regarding Intellectual Property rights;
  • supporting consumer education and digital literacy;
  • promoting safe and informed purchasing decisions;
  • combating counterfeit and pirated products;
  • encouraging cooperation between public authorities, educational institutions, cultural organizations, and international stakeholders;
  • facilitating access to technological tools and real-time consumer information.

Through national campaigns, international cooperation initiatives, institutional partnerships, educational projects, digital communication activities, media visibility, and innovative technological solutions such as the Global InfoCons App, InfoCons contributed to strengthening the connection between consumer protection and Intellectual Property rights.

Particular attention was dedicated to the celebration of World Intellectual Property Day 2026, organized under the global framework promoted by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO / OMPI), as well as to the dissemination of educational and institutional initiatives developed together with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), the Romanian Copyright Office (ORDA), public institutions, universities, cultural organizations, and strategic partners.

  1. The Global InfoCons App and the Protection of Intellectual Property Consumers

The protection of Intellectual Property rights is increasingly interconnected with consumer safety, digital education, informed purchasing decisions, and access to reliable information. In an environment characterized by the rapid circulation of products through both physical and digital marketplaces, consumers are increasingly exposed to risks associated with counterfeit, pirated, dangerous, or non-compliant products.

In this context, technological innovation and rapid access to verified information play an essential role in strengthening consumer protection and promoting respect for Intellectual Property rights.

Through the Global InfoCons App — available in 33 languages — InfoCons continues to support consumers by offering an integrated digital tool dedicated to consumer protection, anti-counterfeiting awareness, product transparency, and real-time access to European alerts regarding dangerous and non-compliant products.

The application contributes to increasing public awareness regarding Intellectual Property rights and counterfeit-related risks while encouraging safer, more responsible, and informed purchasing decisions.

The Global InfoCons App combines consumer education, technological innovation, product verification tools, and access to official information within a single digital ecosystem accessible to consumers at national, European, and international level.

3.1 Consumer Safety and Counterfeit Product Alerts

Counterfeit and non-compliant products represent not only an infringement of Intellectual Property rights, but also a significant risk to consumers’ health, safety, and economic interests. Products that do not comply with European safety standards may expose consumers to chemical, electrical, mechanical, digital, or health-related risks, while also affecting market transparency and consumer trust.

Through the Global InfoCons App, consumers are able to directly access European alerts concerning dangerous, counterfeit, and non-compliant products, helping them better understand the risks associated with unsafe products before making purchasing decisions.

The integration of European alerts within the App supports the rapid dissemination of information regarding:

  • dangerous products;
  • counterfeit products;
  • non-compliant products;
  • recalled products;
  • products presenting health and safety risks.

The app contributes to strengthening consumer awareness regarding the importance of purchasing original, compliant, and properly certified products while promoting respect for Intellectual Property rights and supporting anti-counterfeiting efforts.

By facilitating direct access to official European alert information, the Global InfoCons App helps consumers become more informed, more protected, and better prepared to identify potential risks associated with products available on the market.

At the same time, the application supports broader public awareness initiatives developed by InfoCons, including campaigns such as:

3.3 Real-Time European Alerts and Product Verification

The Global InfoCons App integrates practical digital tools allowing consumers to rapidly verify products and access real-time information directly from their mobile devices.

  1. European Alerts on Non-Compliant Products and Anti-Counterfeiting Efforts

The protection of Intellectual Property rights is closely connected to consumer safety, market transparency, fair competition, and the prevention of counterfeit and non-compliant products. Counterfeit products not only infringe Intellectual Property rights, but may also expose consumers to significant health, safety, environmental, and economic risks.

In an increasingly globalized and digital marketplace, consumers are often exposed to products that do not comply with European safety standards, including counterfeit goods, dangerous products, pirated items, and products lacking proper certification or traceability.

In this context, rapid access to verified information and official alerts becomes essential for strengthening consumer protection and supporting informed purchasing decisions.

Through the Global InfoCons App, consumers are able to directly access European alerts concerning dangerous and non-compliant products, verify products before purchase through barcode scanning functionalities, and better understand the risks associated with counterfeit or unsafe products.

The integration of European alerts within the Global InfoCons App contributes to strengthening anti-counterfeiting efforts, promoting Intellectual Property awareness, and supporting consumer education at national and European level.

4.1 European Alerts on Non-Compliant Products

Between April 18, 2025 and April 18, 2026, more than 5,830 European alerts regarding dangerous and non-compliant products were issued at European level, covering numerous product categories and multiple types of risks.

The European alerts accessible through the App provide consumers with relevant information regarding:

  • product category;
  • product name;
  • country of origin;
  • identified risks;
  • alert description;
  • images of the product;
  • measures adopted at European level.

The integration of these alerts within the App contributes to increasing public awareness regarding the importance of purchasing original, compliant, and properly certified products while supporting anti-counterfeiting initiatives and consumer protection efforts.

No to Piracy!” and, with the support of the Bucharest Court of Appeal and the Cultural Center “Casa Artelor” Sector 3, organized a commemorative event that marks both World Intellectual Property Day and the conclusion of a week dedicated to this important field.

The 2016 event celebrating World Intellectual Property Day continued the tradition established in previous years, once again taking place at the esteemed Bucharest Court of Appeal. This symbolic venue, known for its legal and institutional significance, provided a fitting setting for discussions on the value and role of intellectual property in modern society.

The event gathered numerous distinguished guests, including legal experts, government officials, academics, and representatives of civil society, all of whom contributed to a series of meaningful dialogues. Their discussions focused on the importance of intellectual property rights in fostering innovation, safeguarding creativity, and ensuring the economic and personal rights of creators and inventors.

In the years that followed, this tradition has not only endured but evolved. The 2025 edition of World Intellectual Property Day represented another important milestone in InfoCons’ long-standing efforts to promote Intellectual Property rights, anti-counterfeiting measures, and consumer education in Romania.

Organized under the official World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) 2025 theme — “IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP” — the event highlighted the essential role Intellectual Property rights play in supporting creativity, innovation, and the development of the music industry. The event brought together government representatives, magistrates, public authorities, ambassadors, diplomatic representatives, members of the music industry, academics, business representatives, legal experts, consumer protection organizations, and Intellectual Property professionals, reflecting the growing institutional relevance of Intellectual Property protection in Romania.

The official A.C.T.I.V.E. social media pages were also used during April 2026 in order to promote information regarding World Intellectual Property Day 2026 and educate consumers worldwide on the importance of Intellectual Property Rights. Since its founding, InfoCons has been consistently dedicated to educating and protecting consumers against the dangers associated with counterfeit products. These counterfeit goods, often of inferior and unsafe quality, can pose significant health and safety risks to consumers.

To counter this, InfoCons has organized and carried out numerous awareness campaigns over the years. Through its sustained efforts during April 2026, InfoCons has taken significant strides in aligning consumer protection with the global principles of intellectual property. By fostering informed consumer habits, promoting transparency, and encouraging responsible consumption, the organization has not only contributed to the observance of World Intellectual Property Day but also laid groundwork for lasting change in public perception and behavior toward intellectual property.

The collaboration developed with national authorities and institutional partners, including the Romanian Gendarmerie, further highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts in preventing counterfeiting, piracy, and Intellectual Property infringements, while strengthening consumer safety and market transparency.

Through all these activities, InfoCons actively contributed to:

  • promoting originality, creativity, and innovation;
  • increasing consumer awareness regarding Intellectual Property rights;
  • supporting anti-counterfeiting and anti-piracy initiatives;
  • encouraging responsible and informed consumer behavior;
  • strengthening cooperation between public institutions, academia, cultural organizations, and international stakeholders;
  • facilitating access to reliable information and consumer protection tools.

Looking ahead, InfoCons remains committed to continuing and expanding its efforts in the field of Intellectual Property education, digital consumer protection, anti-counterfeiting awareness, and international cooperation, while further developing innovative tools and educational initiatives dedicated to consumers, young people, institutions, and society as a whole.

By combining education, technology, institutional cooperation, and public awareness, InfoCons continues to support the development of a safer, more transparent, and more responsible environment built on respect for Intellectual Property rights and consumer protection principles.
