Between 2021 and 2024 the price of everyday food climbed sharply across Europe, but not every product rose by the same amount. The average increase for all food and non-alcoholic drinks over this period was about 31.9%. At +34.3%, bread rose roughly in line with the typical food product.

Bread prices climbed as the cost of wheat and flour rose and bakeries faced much higher energy bills for ovens and refrigeration. Because energy is a big part of baking, the energy crisis fed straight into the price of bread.
