JOINT OPEN LETTER OF SUPPORT – For the official recognition of 16 October as European Breast Health Day
Europa Donna Belgium – The Belgian Breast Cancer Association – and InfoCons, the European organization for consumers’ protection and the sole Romanian full member of Consumers International, address you jointly, as partner organizations committed to public health and to the rights and wellbeing of European citizens.
Together, we call for the official recognition of 16 October as European Breast Health Day. Such recognition would help raise awareness of breast cancer prevention, screening and early detection, and would address the significant inequalities in access and participation that still exist across Europe.
Breast cancer remains the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in Europe. Early detection through organized screening markedly improves survival, yet access to screening and to timely care still varies widely from one Member State to another. A shared European day would give citizens, health systems and decision-makers a common moment each year to strengthen prevention, promote participation in screening and close these gaps.
This initiative builds on the event held at the European Parliament on 15 October 2025, during which the need for stronger political action and greater public awareness was clearly highlighted.
We therefore respectfully call on you:
- to support and endorse, at European level, the official recognition of 16 October as European Breast Health Day; and
- to advance concrete measures on prevention, organized screening, early detection and equal access to breast health care for women across the European Union.
We remain fully available to share all relevant documents and background materials, and to work with you and your services to advance this initiative at both European and national level
