Sorin Mierlea, President of InfoCons, is participating online today, 29 September 2026, in the global launch of the Global Innovation Index 2026 – GII 2026, organised by the World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO.
The event is taking place at WIPO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, between 13:30 and 15:30 CEST, corresponding to 14:30–16:30 in Romania, and is also available online through the webcast provided by the organisation.
This year’s Global Innovation Index is entitled “Powering Entrepreneurs at the Frontier of Science” and explores how scientific breakthroughs and frontier technologies can be transformed into innovative ventures, startups and scalable solutions capable of addressing real-world needs.
The Global Innovation Index 2026 is being launched at a pivotal moment, as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, synthetic biology, advanced materials, semiconductors and clean-energy technologies are increasingly moving from research laboratories to the market and are expected to contribute to the next industrial transformation.
The 2026 report ranks the innovation performance of nearly 140 economies, highlighting their respective strengths and weaknesses, while also presenting the world’s leading 100 innovation clusters.
The programme begins with a high-level opening featuring:
- Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO;
- Laura Fernández Delgado, President of the Republic of Costa Rica;
- Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bhutan;
- Lawrence Wong, Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore.
The results of the Global Innovation Index 2026 are presented by Marco M. Alemán, Assistant Director General of WIPO’s IP and Innovation Ecosystems Sector, together with representatives of the WIPO Secretariat.
The second part of the event focuses on the 2026 special theme, “Powering Entrepreneurs at the Frontier of Science,” and addresses several key questions concerning the development of innovation ecosystems:
- How can deep-science ventures move from discovery to scale despite long development timelines and capital gaps?
- Which new deep-science hubs are emerging beyond traditional innovation centres?
- How can artificial intelligence, biotechnology, advanced materials, semiconductors and clean energy progress from pilot projects to scalable pipelines?
- What can governments, companies and research institutions do to transform pilot initiatives into sustainable and scalable projects?
The special theme is presented by Lorenzo Chiavarini, Head of Research at Dealroom.co, together with Sacha Wunsch-Vincent and Chris Harrison from WIPO. Bruno Lanvin, President of the Descartes Institute for the Future in Switzerland, provides comments on the findings.
The panel discussion is moderated by Mariia Shcherbakova, Head of Partnerships at the Swiss LegalTech Association, and brings together:
- Anirudh Sharma, Founder and CEO of Digantara Industries, India;
- Gaëlle Andreatta, Co-founder and CTO of Apheros AG, Switzerland;
- Hisham Haddara, Chairman and CEO of Si-Ware Systems, Egypt;
- Kitty C. Liao, former CERN Fellow and Founder and CEO of IDEABATIC, United Kingdom;
- Le Mai Lan, Vice Chairwoman of Vingroup JSC and President of the University Council at VinUniversity, Viet Nam.
The participation of the President of InfoCons in this event forms part of the organisation’s efforts to follow international developments in intellectual property, innovation and emerging technologies, while promoting an environment in which technological progress is accompanied by accurate information, transparency and respect for consumer rights.
