Top Categories of Cosmetic Products in the Hair Dyes and Colourants Category – Check What You Buy! Choose Cosmetics Wisely with InfoCons!

As part of the campaign “Check What You Buy! Choose Cosmetics Wisely with InfoCons!”, InfoCons works to inform and educate consumers about the risks associated with the use of non-compliant cosmetic products identified in the European Alerts found in the InfoCons App, by promoting accurate information that is scientifically grounded and supported by the expertise of specialists in the field.

How many alerts have been issued for hair dyes and colourants, and how have they evolved over time? As part of the campaign “Check What You Buy! Choose Cosmetics Wisely with InfoCons!”, InfoCons analysed the number and structure of these alerts, based on the data in the InfoCons App.

Number of alerts by product type

Over the period analysed, 156 alerts were recorded. Their number has risen sharply, especially in the last two years: from 3 alerts in 2021, 7 in 2022 and 9 in 2023, to 42 in 2024 and 79 in 2025. For 2026, 16 alerts are recorded, but the data are partial (up to 11 October 2026).

The increase coincides with the ban on the ingredient Lilial in the European Union (March 2022): after the ban came into force, many products containing it were flagged and withdrawn.

Evolution of the number of alerts per year (2026 – partial data).

  • Read the list of ingredients and avoid products with banned substances such as Lilial, or colourants such as PPD.
  • Do a sensitivity (patch) test before every colouring.
  • Check the label, the manufacturer or importer and the expiry date.
