Report at 23 Years of InfoCons – Activity and Impact in Consumer Protection, with Over 127 Million Informed Consumers

In its 23 years of activity, the efforts of InfoCons have become synonymous with consumer protection in Romania and Europe. Starting from the initial vision of an initiative group, InfoCons – European Organization for Consumer Protection and Promotion of Programs and Strategies has steadily developed, standing alongside Romanian and European consumers through the European InfoCons App, as well as through projects, programs, campaigns, comparative studies and actions dedicated to informing and educating them.

These initiatives have targeted numerous fields, such as product labeling, health, healthy nutrition, energy and energy efficiency, tourism services and products, environmental protection and sustainable consumption, financial services and products, as well as other areas of interest for consumers.

In an increasingly interconnected world, InfoCons facilitates consumers’ access to essential information, regardless of the country they are in. Thus, the organization provides Romanian and European consumers with panels containing useful and emergency numbers at an international level, ensuring quick access to important resources regardless of geographic location.

Educational, information and prevention campaigns implemented by InfoCons Consumer Protection

InfoCons implemented over 11 education and information campaigns for consumers on various topics: insurance, automotive, emergency and useful numbers, history, culture, environment, art, telecommunications, cybersecurity, real estate/construction, energy, etc., through the printing and dissemination of materials in over 30,000 locations (Info EU-RO National Network).

Considering that in public institutions the flow of people is specific to institutions such as city halls, all those who interact with them for issuing urban planning certificates, construction certificates, operating permits, paying local taxes, issuing birth/death certificates, issuing identity cards, other types of documents, approvals and authorizations, as well as in pre-university educational institutions, both students (approximately 250,000 students per school-age group – 4th grade: 250,000, 5th grade: 250,000, etc.), parents transiting educational institutions (grades I–V and beyond), other contacts in public institutions, individuals and legal entities, pensioners in relation to pension houses or other units – monthly, over 15,000,000 people access these institutions once or multiple times.

The materials, being posted at public access and information points, are viewed both by staff in public institutions and by citizens who pass through these institutions. At the same time, due to traffic in locations such as airports, etc., citizens traveling through or moving within them, both Romanian citizens traveling abroad or entering the country as well as domestic traffic, create the premise that the total number of people transiting locations where InfoCons materials are displayed exceeds 180,000,000.

Whether in a supermarket or at home, consumers can scan the barcodes of products they want to purchase or consume to find all label information in a fraction of a second. Moreover, after scanning, the InfoCons App alerts consumers regarding the number and names of allergens found in the scanned product. Consumers can rate the products they scan or already have saved, giving them between 1 and 5 stars.

The InfoCons App displays directly on the mobile phone ingredients, the number and type of food additives (in an easy-to-understand language), sugar content, salt content, allergens and calories – information that is often written very small, in overly technical language, or missing entirely (especially for frozen products).

The FREE InfoCons App facilitates access to national, local (by county) and international emergency numbers in multiple languages. For Romania, emergency numbers are displayed in Romanian, English and Ukrainian – given the current context – while for other countries, consumers can find them in English and the language of the selected country.

Food safety alerts and non-food product alerts at EU level, updated as they appear, are displayed in the InfoCons App in Romanian and English, indicating the countries concerned. For each food safety alert, the level of risk is mentioned: low, undetermined, up to serious. In this context, consumers are warned in time and can take action. Thus, products subject to rapid alerts can be avoided, preventing many problems in advance.
