Entry Requirements and Conditions of Stay

Romanian citizens may travel to Canada without a visa for stays of up to six months when travelling for tourism, family visits, business meetings or participation in events.

However, travellers arriving by air must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before departure.

The eTA:

  • is mandatory for air travel to Canada;
  • is generally valid for up to five years or until passport expiration;
  • is linked electronically to the traveller’s passport;
  • does not guarantee entry into Canada, as the final decision remains with Canadian border authorities.

Applications must be submitted online and require:

  • a valid electronic passport;
  • an email address;
  • a payment card;
  • payment of the applicable processing fee.

Romanian citizens holding temporary passports are required to obtain a visitor visa before travelling.

The standard period of stay is generally up to six months, although Canadian authorities may authorize a shorter period depending on the circumstances of the visit.

Travellers should also note that an eTA does not permit employment or studies in Canada. Separate permits are required for such activities.

Travel Medical Insurance

Although travel medical insurance is not a mandatory entry requirement, Romanian citizens travelling to Canada are strongly encouraged to obtain comprehensive travel insurance before departure.

Canada does not provide free healthcare services to tourists. Medical treatment can be costly, and access to healthcare services is generally based on private insurance coverage or direct payment by the patient.

A travel insurance policy should ideally cover:

  • emergency medical treatment;
  • hospitalization;
  • medical transportation;
  • medical repatriation;
  • repatriation in the event of death;
  • other emergency assistance services.

Travellers are advised to ensure that their insurance policy remains valid for the entire duration of their trip, from departure from Romania until their return home.

Since 1 October 2022, Canada has no longer required COVID-19 vaccination, testing, quarantine or isolation measures for travellers entering the country.

Customs Regulations

Visitors may bring personal belongings into Canada for personal use, including clothing, books, electronic devices and sporting equipment.

Certain items must be declared upon arrival, including:

  • food products;
  • plants;
  • products derived from protected species;
  • cultural property and heritage items.

Travellers aged 18 or older may bring limited quantities of alcohol and tobacco products within the duty-free allowances established by Canadian authorities.

Cash amounts exceeding CAD 10,000 must be declared at the border.

Explosives, fireworks, ammunition and other regulated items are subject to strict controls and declaration requirements.

Travelling with Pets

Pets may enter Canada provided they comply with applicable veterinary and public health regulations.

Travellers should verify vaccination requirements, health documentation and transportation rules before departure.

Safety and Security

Canada is widely recognized as one of the safest countries in the world, with relatively low levels of crime and a low terrorism threat level.

The national emergency number is 911.

As a precaution, travellers are encouraged to:

  • carry copies of important travel documents;
  • keep emergency contact information readily available;
  • secure passports and valuables appropriately;
  • remain aware of local conditions and official recommendations.

Driving in Canada

Traffic drives on the right-hand side of the road.

Romanian driving licences are generally recognized for temporary visits, with permitted periods varying between provinces.

An International Driving Permit may be beneficial and, in some jurisdictions, may extend the period during which a visitor may legally drive.

Canadian roads are generally well maintained, and highway speed limits are typically around 100 km/h, although they may vary depending on the province and road type.

Parking in major cities is often subject to fees and local regulations.

Additional Recommendations

Travellers carrying prescription medication should transport it in its original packaging and carry supporting medical documentation whenever possible.

Although recreational cannabis is legal in Canada under specific conditions, transporting cannabis across international borders remains illegal and may result in serious legal consequences.

Travellers should familiarize themselves with Canadian laws and regulations before departure.

What Is Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance provides financial protection against unexpected situations that may arise during international travel.

Depending on the policy, coverage may include:

  • emergency medical expenses;

  • trip interruptions;
  • lost luggage;
  • medical evacuation;
  • repatriation costs.
