Over 260 European Alerts for Products Posing Environmental Risks ! On World Environment Day, Make Informed Choices with the InfoCons Consumer Protection Solution !

Every year, on June 5, the world marks World Environment Day, the United Nations’ most important day dedicated to raising awareness and encouraging action to protect the environment. The 2026 edition focuses on climate change under the global campaign theme #NowForClimate.

This year’s message starts from a simple idea: the planet is sending us signals – heatwaves, wildfires, melting glaciers – and the question is no longer whether change is happening, but how quickly we choose to respond. At InfoCons, we believe that one of the most concrete signals we can send begins right in our shopping basket: non-compliant products containing hazardous substances pollute the environment and pose risks to both human health and nature.

World Environment Day 2026: Climate Action

The 2026 edition of World Environment Day is dedicated to climate action. The World Health Organization highlights that the 1.5°C threshold is on track to be exceeded, but beyond the noise of delays and denial, solutions are already visible: solar panels, wind turbines, people-centered cities, and reforestation initiatives.

Why Does This Matter to Consumers?

Climate change and pollution are not just topics discussed at international summits. They are also present in non-compliant products placed on the market: heavy metals in electronics, phthalates in textiles, and bioaccumulative substances that contaminate water and soil. Choosing a compliant product is, in itself, a form of climate action.

More Than 260 Environmental Risk Alerts Identified Over the Past Year

Based on weekly reports from the InfoCons Alert System for dangerous non-food products, more than 260 alerts concerning non-compliant products posing environmental risks were identified over the past year.

The analysis reveals the following:

  • 99.6% of alerts were classified at the highest severity level – “Serious Risk”;
  • Only 0.4% were classified under other risk levels;
  • 100% of the alerts concerned products intended for consumers, namely products used daily in households.

1. Type of Risk: Pollution as the Common Denominator

By definition, all alerts analyzed included an environmental risk component. The difference lies in the extent to which this risk is combined with other hazards:

  • 69.6% of alerts reported exclusively an environmental risk;
  • 28.5% combined environmental and chemical risks, involving substances harmful to both the environment and human health;
  • 1.5% combined environmental risk with fire hazards, while 0.4% involved injury risks.

2. Product Categories: Electronics Clearly Dominate

The largest number of alerts concerned electrical and electronic equipment, a category accounting for more than two out of every five alerts. These were followed by toys and clothing/textile products.

Electrical and electronic appliances represented 42.6% of all alerts, followed by:

  • Toys – 12.9%
  • Clothing, textiles and fashion items – 10.6%
  • Motor vehicles – 9.1%
  • Sports and recreational equipment – 8.0%

Together with lighting equipment (3.8%) and gadgets (3.0%), products containing electrical and electronic components account for more than half of all alerts.

3. What Makes These Products Dangerous? Lead, Phthalates and Cadmium

The analysis of risk descriptions shows that a small number of substances appear repeatedly.

  • Lead is mentioned in approximately 70% of alerts, particularly in soldering alloys used in electronic products;
  • Phthalates are mentioned in around 24% of alerts;
  • Cadmium appears in nearly 19% of cases.

From a regulatory perspective:

  • 73.8% of alerts cite non-compliance with the RoHS Directive (Restriction of Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment);
  • 13.7% cite violations of the REACH Regulation.

These substances are persistent and bioaccumulative: they do not disappear from the environment but instead accumulate in water, soil and throughout the food chain.

Furthermore:

  • 73% of the products originated from China;
  • 15.2% had an unknown origin;
  • 8% originated from France.

An important detail for consumers is that approximately 65.8% of all alerts concerned products identified as counterfeit, indicating that inexpensive products purchased online may often carry hidden environmental and health costs.
