2. OPENING CEREMONIES – AN UNPRECEDENTED SPECTACLE

The 2026 World Cup will open with an absolute first in the history of the competition: for the first time ever, the tournament will be launched with opening ceremonies held in three different countries on consecutive days, each celebrating the culture and unique identity of the host country.

Opening Ceremony in Mexico – June 11, 2026

Mexico will become the first country to officially open the 2026 World Cup, with a spectacular ceremony held at Mexico City Stadium. The ceremony will begin 90 minutes before kick-off of the opening match and will mark the start of this historic series of opening ceremonies held across the three host countries: Mexico, Canada and the United States of America.

The event will showcase Mexican culture through music, dance and artistic elements inspired by the country’s traditions. A central role will be played by the reinterpretation of the World Cup Trophy through the traditional Mexican art form of “papel picado”, a symbol of creativity, tradition and joy. Among the artists announced for the opening ceremony are Shakira, Burna Boy, Alejandro Fernández, Belinda, Danny Ocean, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Los Ángeles Azules, Maná and Tyla, who will perform tracks from the official album of the competition. Stadium gates will open four hours before kick-off, with fan activities, interactive experiences and special entertainment programmes throughout.

Opening Ceremony in Canada – June 12, 2026

On June 12, 2026, Canada will host its own 2026 World Cup opening ceremony, offering the world a celebration inspired by the cultural diversity, communities and spirit that define the country. The ceremony will take place at Toronto Stadium and will begin 90 minutes before the match between Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina — set to mark the first match played by Canada’s men’s national team at a World Cup held on home soil.

The show will bring together internationally acclaimed artists including Alanis Morissette, Alessia Cara, Elyanna, Jessie Reyez, Michael Bublé, Nora Fatehi, Sanjoy, Vegedream and William Prince. The artistic concept of the ceremony will highlight Canada’s multicultural identity through a reinterpretation of the World Cup Trophy in the form of a traditional Canadian quilt.

Opening Ceremony in the United States of America – June 12, 2026

On June 12, 2026, the United States of America will host its own 2026 World Cup opening ceremony in Los Angeles, at Los Angeles Stadium. The ceremony will begin 90 minutes before the match between the United States of America and Paraguay. The event will bring together music, sport and entertainment in a show of international magnitude, featuring artists such as Katy Perry, Future, Anitta, LISA, Rema and Tyla. Stadium gates will open four hours before kick-off, with special activations and interactive fan experiences throughout.

3. DOCUMENTS REQUIRED TO TRAVEL TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

From June 11 to July 19, 2026, the United States of America will co-host the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico — one of the most important international sporting events, bringing together millions of fans, tourists and national teams from around the world.

If you are planning to travel to the United States of America to attend matches of the 2026 World Cup, it is important to inform yourself in advance about the required documents, entry conditions, recommended insurance and rules to be followed during your stay.

Documents required to enter the United States of America

Romanian citizens may only enter the United States of America with a valid visa, obtained before travelling. It is important to note that holding a visa does not automatically guarantee entry into American territory — the final decision rests with border officers from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

As of April 7, 2025, American authorities have introduced new procedures for temporary visas, and confirmation of a consular interview is made exclusively on the basis of a valid barcode attached to the DS-160 form.

Compliance with the terms of stay is essential. Overstaying the authorised period or violating US law may result in severe sanctions, including deportation or a future ban on entry into the United States of America.

Medical insurance – an essential document for travel to the USA

While there are no mandatory vaccinations for entry into the USA, it is recommended to consult updated public health information before departure. Taking out travel medical insurance is extremely important, given the high cost of medical services in the United States of America. Without insurance, access to medical care may be limited, and the costs of emergency treatment can be very high. A travel insurance policy can cover emergency medical expenses, hospitalisation, medical transport and repatriation in the event of accidents or illness during the trip.

Customs regulations and luggage

Upon entering the United States of America, customs authorities carry out strict checks. Food products, plant or animal-based items must be declared without exception. Failure to declare them may result in confiscation and fines. Cash amounts exceeding the equivalent of USD 10,000 must be declared at the border. Certain products — such as weapons, drugs, some biological products or certain food items — are prohibited or may only be brought in under special conditions.

Travelling with pets?

Pets may only be brought into the United States of America if they meet the sanitary and veterinary requirements set by American authorities. Before departure, check the required documents, mandatory vaccinations and up-to-date transport conditions.

Personal safety recommendations in the USA

During your stay in the USA, it is recommended to pay close attention to personal safety, especially in heavily crowded or tourist areas. Pickpocketing, card fraud and various scams can occur in major urban centres. It is advised to keep documents and valuables in safe places, use bank cards instead of cash where possible and regularly check bank statements after each transaction. Before travelling, check the international usage conditions of your card and any fees charged by the issuing bank.

Consular assistance for Romanian citizens in the USA

In case of emergency, Romanian citizens may seek assistance from the Romanian Embassy in Washington D.C. or from the Romanian Consulates General in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Miami, depending on their location.

4. DOCUMENTS REQUIRED TO TRAVEL TO MEXICO

From June 11 to July 19, 2026, Mexico will co-host the 2026 World Cup alongside the United States of America and Canada — one of the most important international sporting events, bringing together millions of fans, tourists and national teams from around the world.

If you are planning to travel to Mexico to attend 2026 World Cup matches or to discover destinations such as Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Cancún, Riviera Maya, Chichén Itzá or other renowned tourist attractions, it is important to inform yourself in advance about the required documents, entry rules and safety recommendations.

Entry conditions and terms of stay in Mexico

Romanian citizens holding standard or electronic passports may enter Mexico without a visa for tourism or business purposes, in accordance with the bilateral agreements in force. Upon arrival in Mexico, immigration authorities may request documents confirming the stated purpose of the trip.

To avoid unpleasant situations, tourists are advised to carry the following documents:

  • passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the planned date of departure from Mexico;
  • return flight ticket;
  • confirmed accommodation reservations;
  • detailed travel itinerary;
  • proof of sufficient financial resources;
  • travel medical insurance;
  • documents justifying the purpose of the trip.

For visits to family or friends, it may be useful to present an official invitation containing the host’s details and accommodation address. Upon arrival in Mexico, immigration authorities may conduct interviews regarding the purpose of the visit, planned itinerary, financial situation and authenticity of documents presented.

Compliance with the terms of stay in Mexico

The period of stay approved by Mexican authorities must be strictly observed. Overstaying may result in fines, administrative proceedings, expulsion and possible future entry restrictions. Work activities on Mexican territory require special immigration permits.

For minors travelling without both parents or legal representatives, a notarised declaration translated into Spanish and legalised in accordance with applicable requirements is recommended.

Medical insurance for travel to Mexico

Although medical services in major Mexican cities are generally of good quality, costs can be high for foreign nationals. For this reason, taking out travel medical insurance is essential before departure. An appropriate policy can cover medical consultations, hospitalisation, emergency procedures, medical transport and other unforeseen costs during the trip. Before departing, it is recommended to verify whether the insurer has medical partners in Mexico and what procedures apply in the event of an emergency.

There are no mandatory vaccinations for entry into Mexico, except in special situations related to travellers from areas affected by yellow fever. Doctors may recommend vaccinations against hepatitis A and B, typhoid fever, diphtheria, poliomyelitis or tetanus.

Health risks and medical recommendations in Mexico

Cases of dengue, zika and chikungunya — diseases transmitted through mosquito bites — have been reported in certain regions of Mexico. To reduce risk, it is recommended to use repellent products, wear long-sleeved clothing in areas with dense vegetation and avoid areas with stagnant water.

Furthermore, Mexico City is located at approximately 2,300 metres altitude and may cause discomfort for people with cardiac or respiratory conditions. High levels of air pollution may pose an additional risk factor for certain categories of people.

Customs regulations in Mexico

Visitors may bring personal items, sports equipment, photographic and electronic equipment within the limits set by customs regulations. It is recommended to check the list of permitted and prohibited items upon entry into Mexico, especially regarding food, plants and products of animal origin.

Safety and conduct recommendations in Mexico

Valuables and large sums of money should be kept in hotel safes or secure locations. It is advisable to keep both physical and electronic copies of travel documents. For currency exchange, use only authorised banks or exchange offices and avoid transactions in unofficial locations. Tourists are advised to avoid involvement in political activities, public demonstrations or conflictual situations and to follow the recommendations of local authorities.

Natural hazards in Mexico

Mexico is exposed to natural phenomena such as hurricanes, tropical storms, earthquakes and volcanic activity. Hurricane season generally runs from June to November, affecting mainly coastal regions. Some areas of the country are also at seismic risk. Before and during travel, it is recommended to monitor information and warnings issued by local authorities.

5. DOCUMENTS REQUIRED TO TRAVEL TO CANADA

From June 11 to July 19, 2026, Canada will co-host the 2026 World Cup alongside the United States of America and Mexico — one of the most important international sporting events, bringing together millions of fans, tourists and national teams from around the world.

If you are planning to travel to Canada to attend 2026 World Cup matches or to discover cities such as Toronto and Vancouver, it is important to know the entry conditions, terms of stay, customs requirements and safety recommendations well in advance.

Entry conditions and terms of stay in Canada

Romanian citizens may travel to Canada without a visa for stays of up to 6 months, when the purpose of travel is tourism, visits to family or friends, participation in events or other short-term activities.

For arrivals by air, it is however mandatory to obtain in advance an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA). This is an essential entry requirement for citizens arriving in Canada by air or sea (not required for land border crossings). The eTA can be obtained online by completing a form on the official Canadian government website. It is valid for 5 years or until the passport expires and allows stays of up to 6 months. It is recommended to apply for the eTA well in advance of travel, as processing may take from a few minutes to several days.

The standard period of stay approved is a maximum of 6 months, though Canadian authorities may set a shorter period. It is important to note that the eTA does not permit employment or study activities in Canada. Special permits are required for these purposes.

Medical insurance for travel to Canada

Although Canada has one of the most highly regarded healthcare systems in the world, medical services are not free for tourists. Access to medical care is generally provided on the basis of travel insurance or through direct payment of medical costs. For this reason, taking out travel medical insurance is strongly recommended before departure. An appropriate policy can cover the costs of medical consultations, emergency treatment, hospitalisation, medical transport and repatriation in unforeseen situations.

Romanian citizens travelling to Canada under the eTA are advised to hold a travel insurance policy taken out before departure and valid for the entire duration of their stay. For adequate protection, the policy should cover the period from departure from Romania to the return home.

Currently, there are no special requirements regarding vaccination, testing or quarantine for entry into Canada for Romanian citizens.

Customs regulations in Canada

Canada applies clear customs regulations. Cash exceeding CAD 10,000 must be declared to customs authorities. Explosives, ammunition, fireworks and other regulated products are subject to strict rules and must be declared upon entry. Please note: although recreational cannabis is legal in Canada, bringing it across the border in either direction is prohibited and may result in severe sanctions.

Travelling with pets in Canada

Pets may be brought into Canada under conditions similar to those applied in European Union member states. Owners must check the required health documents and transport conditions set by Canadian authorities before departure.

Medication and pharmaceutical products

Prescription medications must be transported in their original packaging and accompanied by a prescription or a medical letter specifying the treatment and the need for its administration.

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is a form of financial protection that can cover a wide range of unforeseen situations arising during travel abroad, including medical emergencies, accidents, lost luggage or other incidents that may affect your trip. It provides an extra layer of security and peace of mind during travel, whether for tourism, education, business or participation in the 2026 World Cup.

Safety and crime in Canada

Canada is considered one of the safest countries in the world, with low crime rates and a low risk of terrorism. In emergency situations, tourists can call the single emergency number 911. It is recommended to keep copies of travel documents and note the contact details of a trusted person, for unforeseen situations.

Road traffic and car hire in Canada

Traffic drives on the right-hand side of the road, and road infrastructure is very well developed. The Romanian driving licence can be used for periods of between 6 months and one year, depending on the province visited. In certain situations, an international driving permit may extend the period of validity. Speed limits on motorways are generally 100 km/h, and may reach 110 km/h in some provinces.

6. TRAVEL MEDICAL INSURANCE – ESSENTIAL FOR THE 2026 WORLD CUP

Whether you will be travelling to attend matches in New York, Dallas, Toronto, Vancouver, Mexico City, Guadalajara or Monterrey, it is important to prepare your travel documents in advance and to pay particular attention to travel medical insurance.

Although none of the three host countries currently requires travel medical insurance as a mandatory entry condition for Romanian tourists, the cost of medical services can be very high, and the lack of an adequate policy may generate significant expenses in the event of an unforeseen situation.

Why is medical insurance important at the 2026 World Cup?

Participating in a sporting competition of this scale involves international travel, long flights, transit through busy airports, participation in events with large numbers of people and travel across multiple cities or even countries. In such situations, a medical issue, an accident or an emergency can arise at any time, and the associated costs can far exceed the value of an insurance policy.

Medical insurance for travel to the United States of America

For travel to the USA, taking out medical insurance is strongly recommended. Although American authorities do not require presentation of an insurance policy upon entry, medical services are among the most expensive in the world. The costs of a consultation, hospitalisation or medical procedure can reach considerable sums, and unplanned access to the American healthcare system without adequate insurance coverage can lead to significant and difficult-to-manage expenses. Even a simple visit to an emergency medical facility can involve major additional costs. Moreover, many medications are only available on prescription, and access to medical services can become difficult and costly without adequate insurance.

Medical insurance for travel to Canada

Romanian citizens travelling to Canada are advised to hold a travel insurance policy taken out before departure and valid for the entire duration of their stay. Although Canada is renowned for its high-performing healthcare system, medical services are not free for tourists. Access to medical care is generally provided through travel insurance or via direct payment of medical costs. For adequate protection, the policy should cover the period from departure from Romania to the return home.

Medical insurance for travel to Mexico

For travel to Mexico, authorities expressly recommend taking out medical, travel and life insurance. Although medical services are of good quality in many parts of the country, they involve high costs for foreign nationals. In most situations, in accordance with local practice, medical services must initially be paid for by the patient, with amounts to be recovered subsequently from the insurance company. Before departure, ask your insurer for information about local partners and medical facilities you can turn to in case of need.

What should medical insurance for the 2026 World Cup include?

Before taking out a policy, it is recommended to verify that it includes:

  • emergency medical expenses and hospitalisation;
  • medical transport;
  • medical repatriation;
  • repatriation in the event of death;
  • 24/7 permanent assistance;
  • coverage for the entire duration of travel;
  • coverage for all countries you intend to visit.

Before departure, check whether your insurance: is valid in the United States of America, Canada and/or Mexico; covers the entire period of travel; includes medical repatriation costs; provides permanent emergency assistance; has a coverage limit adequate for North American medical costs; and covers all activities you intend to undertake during the trip.

Vaccinations and general medical recommendations

Currently, there are no mandatory vaccinations for tourist travel to the United States of America, Canada or Mexico, except in special situations specified by health authorities. Before departure, it is recommended to consult updated information published by competent authorities and to check destination-specific medical recommendations.

7. HOW TO AVOID TICKET FRAUD AT THE 2026 WORLD CUP

From June 11 to July 19, 2026, the United States of America, Canada and Mexico will host the 2026 World Cup. As the competition approaches and interest in match tickets grows, so does the risk of fraud, fake websites and misleading offers. Given the very high demand for tickets and the extreme popularity of many matches in the competition, consumers must pay close attention to how they purchase tickets and products associated with the event.

Purchase tickets only from official and verified sources

To avoid fraud and financial loss, tickets must be purchased exclusively through official platforms or authorised partners. Consumers should be alert to websites that imitate official platforms, using similar URLs and graphics identical to authentic ones. Always check the URL of the platform carefully before entering any personal or financial data, and always access official platforms by typing the address manually in your browser — not through links received by email or on social media.

Do not let time pressure influence your purchasing decision

Ticket fraud frequently uses messages such as “last seats available”, “offer valid for only a few minutes” or “exclusive tickets”. Before making any payment, verify information from multiple sources and always access official platforms. Avoid clicking on links received via SMS, email or social media from unknown people and always verify the authenticity of offers.

Avoid direct money transfers

If tempted by an attractive offer on a resale platform, avoid transferring money directly to the seller through informal payment methods. Payments made through person-to-person transfers or through apps that do not offer buyer protection can make it very difficult to recover your money in the event of fraud. Use only payment systems integrated within official platforms and avoid transactions that involve communicating your bank details directly to unknown individuals.

Verify the identity of sellers and platforms

Before any transaction, verify: whether the platform holds a valid security certificate (the address must begin with HTTPS); whether there is clear contact information and a physical company address; whether reviews are verifiable and come from trusted sources; and whether there is a clear customer support programme. Avoid platforms that do not have transparent information about the company operating them or that request your bank details through unofficial channels.

Use safe payment methods

In certain situations, financial institutions may facilitate the recovery of paid amounts if the purchased service is not delivered or differs significantly from what was presented in the offer. The use of bank cards offering purchase protection is recommended. Keep all transaction documents, including payment confirmations, invoices and correspondence with the seller.

Beware of counterfeit products associated with the 2026 World Cup

In addition to ticket fraud, major sporting competitions also attract the sale of significant quantities of counterfeit products. Shirts, scarves, balls, promotional items, souvenirs and other football-related products are among the most frequently counterfeited articles sold during international sporting competitions. Counterfeit products not only affect the sports industry and economy, but can also pose a risk to consumers, as they do not always meet the safety and quality standards applicable to genuine products. To avoid purchasing counterfeit products, buy exclusively from authorised retailers, official shops and trusted sources.

9. GENERAL PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR TOURNAMENT PARTICIPANTS

Transport and getting around

All three host countries have well-developed transport infrastructure. In the United States of America and Canada, hiring a car is one of the most popular ways to travel between cities. The Romanian driving licence is valid in both countries. In Mexico, public transport in major cities is well developed, and taxis and ride-sharing services are widely available. It is recommended to book transport in advance for match days, when demand is significantly higher.

Currency and payments

The currencies used in the host countries are: the US dollar (USD) in the USA, the Canadian dollar (CAD) in Canada and the Mexican peso (MXN) in Mexico. Debit and credit cards are widely accepted in all three countries. It is recommended to find out in advance about bank fees applicable to international transactions and to exchange currency through official channels, avoiding informal exchange offices.

Climate and recommended equipment

The competition takes place during the northern hemisphere summer, so temperatures can be high, especially in Mexico and the southern United States of America. Recommended items include: light and breathable clothing, high-SPF sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, adequate hydration throughout the day — particularly on match days — and a light raincoat or umbrella for regions with summer showers.

Safety and conduct

All 2026 World Cup participants are advised to comply with the local legislation of each host country, to avoid high-risk areas, not to leave valuables unattended and to keep copies of their identity and travel documents. It is recommended to note the contact details of the Romanian Embassies and Consulates in the USA, Canada and Mexico, for any consular emergency situations.

CONCLUSIONS

The 2026 World Cup is a unique event in the history of world football, and participating in it is an unforgettable experience for any football lover. InfoCons Consumer Protection recommends that all participants prepare thoroughly before departure: make sure you have all required travel documents, take out adequate medical insurance for your destination, purchase tickets exclusively from official sources, familiarise yourself with local rules in each host country and use the InfoCons App as a support tool throughout your travels.

Being well-informed and properly prepared are the best tools for enjoying this extraordinary competition in complete safety and comfort. Best of luck and joy to all participants at the 2026 World Cup!
