France National Day – The Fall of the Bastille

On July 14, 1789, the storming of the Bastille by the Parisian population marks a turning point in the French Revolution. The fortress, a symbol of royal absolutism, was stormed, even though it contained only seven prisoners. The event was perceived as a victory of the people against royal oppression. The fall of the Bastille was celebrated on July 14, 1790, with the Fête de la Fédération (Festival of the Federation) , symbolizing national unity.

Evolution of July 14 – InfoCons informs you

On July 14, 1790, a year after the storming of the Bastille, La Fayette organized a great national celebration to celebrate the unity of France. Thousands of people gathered at the Champ de Mars, where La Fayette and King Louis XVI took an oath of loyalty to the Nation and the Constitution. The event was marked by enthusiastic festivities and it symbolized the hope for national unity.

Under subsequent regimes, the commemoration of July 14 was abandoned in favor of other holidays. It was only in 1880, with the advent of the Third Republic, that July 14 was established as a national holiday, celebrating popular heroism and national unity.
