The Evolution of Belgium’s National Day – Stay informed with InfoCons !
On June 19 , 1831 , the National Congress decreed that the anniversary of the Belgian Revolution of 1830 would be celebrated annually with various festivities . The law of August 20, 1880 , initially stipulated that the national holiday would take place on the third Sunday in August . However , this was changed by the law of May 27 , 1890 , which designated July 21, the anniversary of King Leopold I’s swearing-in , as the date for the national holiday . During the first celebration on July 21, events were also organized for the two days following the holiday, although these days were not declared official public holidays .

Thus , July 21 , 1890 , marked the first celebration of the national holiday on this date . Regarding the parade organized in Belgium on this occasion , a military and civil parade was held on July 22 , 1890, and in 1895 , it took place on July 23 . It wasn’t until 1905 that the parade date was fixed for July 21 . Nowadays , numerous events take place annually on this date in Belgium , and the parade remains one of the important traditions .
