The significance of Swiss National Day with InfoCons

At the beginning of August 1291, men from the three rural communes (Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden) swore eternal loyalty to each other through the Federal Charter, promising mutual support and assistance. The alliance was primarily formed to resist the Habsburgs, who were trying to strengthen their control over the strategic region leading to the Gotthard Pass.

August 1st is celebrated mainly within local communities, with a radio or television address by the President of the Swiss Confederation being the sole exception to this tradition of communal celebrations. These local festivities often include speeches by notable public figures from political or cultural spheres, accompanied by concerts, choir performances, gymnastic displays, and the community singing the national anthem.

Switzerland Day 2024 – Traditions

Among the known traditions are fireworks displays, bonfires usually lit on hills and other high places, illuminated lanterns, and a parade. Public and private buildings are decorated with national, cantonal, and community flags, and bakers produce special bread rolls with a small Swiss flag on top.

A unique celebration takes place at the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen. The waterfall has been illuminated for special occasions since the mid-nineteenth century. From 1920 onwards, it has been lit up annually on August 1st, and exclusively so since 1966. On this day, a magnificent fireworks display attracts large crowds of spectators to this picturesque site.

A national celebration is held at the Rütli Meadow in the canton of Uri, above Lake Lucerne. This event takes place at the same site where the legendary oath of alliance was made. Legend has it that the representatives of the three founding localities – “the three Confederates” – swore their oath on the Rütli meadow, which overlooks Lake Lucerne.

On the occasion of Swiss National Day, InfoCons extends its warmest wishes for health, joy, and prosperity to all Swiss citizens! Happy Swiss National Day with a new attitude!
