Moldova’s Independence – Context

The choice of August 27th to celebrate Moldova’s Independence Day is not coincidental but deeply rooted in historical events. It is linked to August 27th, 1989, when the Great National Assembly took place. On that day, Moldovan citizens demanded the adoption of the Romanian language as the national language and a return to the Latin alphabet, expressing their desire to break free from Soviet influence.

On August 27th, 1991, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova formalized this desire by signing the Declaration of Independence, which was approved by 227 deputies. This date remains a symbol of the fight for sovereignty and national identity, celebrated with pride every year.
