Independence Day in Bulgaria 2024 – Traditions and Customs

The celebration of September 22 was officially declared a holiday by a decision of the Bulgarian Parliament on September 10, 1998. Although the significance of this event was not always fully recognized in the past, the landmark year of 1908, when Bulgaria regained its independence after five centuries of Ottoman rule, marked an important return to the world map. On this day, Bulgarians proudly and respectfully remember this significant moment in national history.

Today, Independence Day is celebrated with great importance throughout the country, but the most notable ceremonies take place in two iconic cities: Veliko Tarnovo and Sofia. Veliko Tarnovo, a former medieval capital and symbol of Bulgaria‘s historic past, hosts large-scale parades and events, reflecting its historical and cultural significance. A special ceremony also occurs at the “Tsarevets” monument, where national heroes are honored, and key moments of the struggle for independence are revisited.

In the current capital, Sofia, the events are equally impressive. The ceremonies include military parades, traditional music and dance performances, and various educational and cultural activities. These celebrations not only commemorate the independence achieved in 1908 but also highlight Bulgaria’s cultural and historical identity.

On the occasion of Independence Day in Bulgaria, InfoCons  extends its warmest wishes for health, joy, and prosperity to all Bulgarian citizens! Happy Independence Day Bulgaria , with a new attitude!
