The President of InfoCons Consumer Protection , Mr. Sorin Mierlea , is participating as a speaker at the European event on Mental Health in the Digital Era
Sorin Mierlea, President of InfoCons, participates as a speaker at the event “Prevention in Mental Health in the Digital Era in Europe – Digital tools, human expertise and the protection of minors”, organized today, March 24, 2026, in Brussels.
Mental health represents one of the most important public health challenges at the level of the European Union, having a direct impact on individual well-being, social cohesion, economic productivity, and the sustainability of healthcare systems.
According to data from the World Health Organization, nearly 1 in 6 European citizens faces a mental health issue, and depression and anxiety are among the leading causes of disability. Adolescents and young people represent a particularly vulnerable group, especially in the context of intensive use of the digital environment.
In this context, prevention and early intervention become essential. The rapid development of digital tools and artificial intelligence brings significant opportunities, but also real risks, especially when technology is used without ethical safeguards, without effective mechanisms for the protection of minors, and without a clear distinction from qualified psychological support.
Recent cases reported at the European level regarding the impact of AI companion chatbots on adolescents’ mental health highlight the need for a responsible approach, based on the protection of minors, the firm application of European digital legislation, and the integration of technology exclusively as a tool for prevention, education, and access—not as a substitute for human interaction.
