e100 Curcumin

Food additive in the category of natural colorants. It gives a yellow-orange color and it is allowed to be used in any type of food (alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, meat products, milk, eggs, vegetables, fruits, cereals, sweets etc.) except those meant for infants and young children, according to the quantities provided by their recipes. In foods it can be found as the E100(i)-Curcumin additive or the E100(ii)-Turmeric. Both are natural colorants, obtained from the roots and the stems of Curcuma longa and Curcuma domestica. Curcumin is the crude extract, while turmeric is the purified compound. This colorant is hardly soluble in water and the obtained color varries from yellow to red, depending on the pH of the food in which it is added to.
