e950 Acesulfame K

Synthetic food additive with sweetening role. It is about 200 times sweeter than sugar, comparing equal amounts from the two products. Acesulfame K is chemically stable compound at high temperatures and acidic environments. Does not contain calories and, although not a carbohydrate, it suddenly triggers pancreatic activity which increases its possibilities of use, compared to other artificial sweeteners. The pancreas produces insulin in quantities proportional to the precieved intensity of the sensation of sweet. Because insulin does not meet the sugars it needs to metabolize in blood, it triggers the feeling of hunger to recieve the carbohydrates it needs to neutralize itself. The hormonal imbalance thus created is resolved by food consumption. This action mechanism can be an explanation for the continuous percentage growth of overweight or obese population, as well as the lack of results of many weightloss diets. World organisations such as the Codex Alimentarius Commission and the European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Food consider the use of this additive, which is excreted unchanged in the urine, to be safe.
