Innovating for the Planet : Science , Technology , and Digitalisation at COP29 Day 6

Today, November 16th 2024, marks the sixth day of the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 29) , which takes place in Baku, Azerbaijan. Today’s main theme centers around Science, Technology, and Digitalisation in relation to climate action. For the first time in COP history, the conference is hosting a dedicated Digitalisation Day, underscoring the crucial role of digital technologies in addressing the climate crisis.

Digital innovations offer immense potential to accelerate climate action, from improving energy efficiency to enabling more accurate climate modeling and data analysis. Yet, the rapid adoption of these technologies also poses challenges, contributing to increased energy consumption and the generation of e-waste. Striking the right balance between harnessing the benefits of digital transformation and minimizing its environmental footprint is essential.

A key moment in today’s discussions is a high-level roundtable focusing on the pivotal role of digitalisation in combating climate change.
